The other way is to go to a provider of legal documents and purchase for download forms. There are a number of these. Some are better than others.
Neither of these are inherently problematic. Getting information on the law from the internet can be of great help for an individual. With a baseline of information, a person can have a meaningful conversation with an attorney, leading to finding a better solution for the person.
The issue is when people rely on the information from the internet to create their own legal documents. Either by using the form provided from a website or cobbling together bits from different examples online. Again, there is nothing inherently wrong with doing this. Creating these documents can offer some level of protection.
The real issue is based on jurisdictions and the fact the internet transcends political lines on a map. With a little bit of searching, documentation can be pulled from Florida, Colorado, and Oregon. Each of these States have different law, meaning the language used in a document needs to be different based on the local law. Even more dangerous perhaps with those same searches is documents from the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia or elsewhere can be found and used.
The law among the United States is fractured enough. Adding in different countries, with different developments to the legal system creates even more problems. Provisions for a will, a contract, or litigation document could be wonderful in one location and anything from frowned upon to declared illegal in another.
This is the issue with using legal documents from the internet. There is no guarantee the language found is enforceable where the individual using the document lives. Legal documents are powerful, binding courses of action and establishing liability. Putting the wrong language into a document for a Judge can be devastating. By all means, use the internet. There is good information on the law. Learn and prepare for further conversations. However, if at all possible do not use a document just printed from the internet. It may be expensive to hire an attorney to draft a document for you, it is more expensive to hire an attorney to litigate a losing battle over the document and then have to pay the attorney to draft a new version.
